Program Overview

Data is the fundamental currency of the modern digital economy. From small business tracking systems to massive cloud platforms processing millions of international transactions daily, every digital interface relies on a robust database backend. The Database Management program at ISEST provides the essential engineering skills required to design, model, administer, and secure complex corporate data environments.

The curriculum balances classical relational database modelling with modern unstructured Big Data platforms. Students will transition from writing basic query scripts to managing distributed enterprise databases, tuning performance under heavy traffic loads, and implementing high-availability recovery pipelines. Enrolling at the HND level and advancing to a B.Tech, graduates build the technical competence needed to handle critical data warehousing and business intelligence operations for top-tier employers.

Main Objectives

  • To teach the core principles of structured and unstructured data architecture, modeling, and design.
  • To build expert-level fluency in writing and optimizing advanced database queries using standard industry languages.
  • To train students in database administration (DBA) tasks including data migration, monitoring, and user permission management.
  • To equip students with standard backup, failover, and disaster recovery strategies to prevent catastrophic data loss.
  • To introduce the fundamentals of Big Data, data warehousing, and business intelligence analytics.

Graduates of the program will be proficient in:

  • Relational Database Engineering: Designing, normalising, and managing structured databases using Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
  • NoSQL & Unstructured Systems: Working with modern NoSQL architectures like MongoDB, Redis, and Cassandra for large-scale data applications.
  • Database Administration (DBA): Installing, patching, configuring, and hardening database engines against unauthorised access.
  • Performance Optimisation: Tuning indexing strategies, analysing query execution plans, and resolving concurrency or deadlocking issues under heavy loads.
  • Data Warehousing & ETL: Building Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) pipelines to consolidate data for enterprise reporting and business analytics.
  • High Availability & Recovery: Implementing replication architectures, clustering, automated scheduling, and data archiving strategies.
  • Cloud Data Integration: Deploying and managing cloud-native databases on platforms such as AWS (RDS, DynamoDB) or Microsoft Azure SQL.
