Electrotechnics

Program Overview

Modern industrial economies and urbanization depend entirely on safe, reliable, and highly efficient electrical infrastructure. The Electrotechnics program at ISEST/YIBS is a core technical engineering discipline designed to train power engineers, industrial electricians, and electrical grid managers who can design, install, and maintain high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.

This program goes far beyond basic household wiring, focusing on heavy power generation, electrical machine mechanics, distribution grid safety, and commercial building electrical architecture. Enrolling at the HND level and progressing to a B.Tech, students train in high-voltage testing bays and industrial motor laboratories. They master electrical design drafting, high-power transformer maintenance, motor control logic, and modern smart grid configurations. Graduates emerge fully prepared to operate within national energy utilities, oversee electrical installations on massive construction projects, and manage complex industrial power networks.

Main Objectives

  • To teach the mathematical and physical principles of alternating current ($AC$) and direct current ($DC$) power networks, electromagnetism, and electrical machines.
  • To develop expert proficiency in designing, drafting, and calculating load profiles for complex industrial and residential electrical installations.
  • To train students in configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining heavy electrical machinery, including synchronous motors, industrial generators, and large transformers.
  • To build advanced mastery in implementing industrial motor control circuits, protective relay setups, and earthing (grounding) safety systems.
  • To prepare graduates to conduct rigorous power quality audits, energy efficiency analyses, and preventative high-voltage maintenance.

Skills Acquired

Graduates of the program will be proficient in:

  • Industrial Power Distribution: Designing single-line diagrams, calculating short-circuit currents, and sizing circuit breakers, busbars, and power cables.
  • Electrical Design Drafting: Utilizing industry-standard software packages like AutoCAD Electrical and Caneco BT to draft compliant engineering blueprints.
  • Motor Control & Automation: Wiring and troubleshooting manual, semi-automatic, and automated industrial motor starters (such as star-delta, forward-reverse, and variable speed drives).
  • High-Voltage Substation Operations: Managing step-up and step-down transformers, handling isolators, and maintaining safety interlocks within electrical substations.
  • Power Quality Auditing: Utilizing power analyzers to measure power factor, detect harmonic distortions, and install corrective capacitor banks.
  • HSE & Electrical Safety: Executing strict Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) safety protocols and designing fault protection loops to mitigate workplace arc flashes
