Maintenance of biomedical equipment

Program Overview

Modern healthcare relies entirely on advanced diagnostic, life-support, and therapeutic technologies. When a hospital’s equipment breaks down, lives are directly at stake. The Maintenance of Biomedical Equipment program at ISEST is an elite, highly specialized interdisciplinary field that bridges the gap between engineering, healthcare, and biological sciences.

This program goes far beyond basic electronics repair, training students to safely calibrate, maintain, and manage sensitive clinical equipment. Enrolling at the HND level and progressing to a B.Tech, students divide their time between technical engineering laboratories and real-world hospital clinical environments. They master the mechanics of medical imaging hardware (X-Ray, ultrasound), patient monitoring arrays, surgical equipment, and laboratory analyzers. Graduates emerge as critical clinical asset specialists, fully prepared to maintain hospital technology infrastructures, ensure medical safety compliance, and eliminate device failure in crucial medical situations.

Main Objectives

  • To teach the anatomical and physiological concepts required to understand how medical hardware interfaces safely with the human body.
  • To build complete technical mastery in troubleshooting overlapping analog circuits, microcontrollers, fluidic loops, and pneumatic medical control blocks.
  • To train students in the exact execution of high-level calibration and preventative maintenance strategies according to international healthcare standards.
  • To develop expert competency in using advanced medical testing equipment, such as patient simulators, electrical safety analyzers, and gas flow meters.
  • To equip graduates with the administrative skills to manage hospital asset networks, run software-driven equipment tracking profiles, and evaluate medical vendor contracts.

Skills Acquired

  • Clinical Device Diagnostics: Rapidly isolating faults across complex medical hardware systems, including electrocardiograms (ECGs), incubators, and defibrillators.
  • Medical Calibration & Testing: Running precision compliance tests utilizing safety analyzers to identify dangerous electrical leakage currents and grounding failures.
  • Imaging Systems Operations Support: Troubleshooting and performing preventative component maintenance on diagnostic imaging equipment like ultrasounds, dental X-rays, and endoscope lines.
  • Laboratory Instrumentation Tuning: Adjusting fluid channels, optical arrays, and thermal profiles inside automated hematology and biochemistry blood analyzers.
  • Healthcare Network IT Integration: Configuring and maintaining Hospital Information Systems (HIS) alongside medical imaging archival networks ($DICOM$/$PACS$).
  • HSE Hospital Bio-Decontamination: Enforcing hospital infection control protocols, managing hazardous biochemical risks, and sterilizing equipment securely.

Target Audience

  • Baccalauréat/A-Level graduates with high performance in physics, mathematics, and biology who want to work in the medical field without being clinicians.
  • Electronics technicians or computer networking agents looking to transition into the high-margin, highly sought-after medical equipment maintenance sector.
  • Hospital technical staff wanting formal, high-level university engineering credentials to step into leadership or procurement roles.
  • Aspiring medical device distributors, independent clinical asset management consultants, and specialized healthcare entrepreneurs.
